A Brief History of Portable Restrooms

July 2, 2021

Typically portable toilets aren’t something you look forward to using, but they can be necessary and quite convenient.

Fortunately, with Honey Bucket, portable toilets don’t have to be a nightmare to use. When maintained properly, porta-potties don’t have strong odors, nor are they any dirtier than other public toilets. They also help increase employee efficiency and morale.

Dockyard Origins

Portable toilets date back to the 1940s when shipbuilders needed a place to relieve themselves.

During this time, workers would have to walk all the way back to the dock to use the restroom which took time away from the project at hand and made it a hassle to get to the bathroom.

Temporary bathrooms were constructed out of wood, outfitted with a holding tank which led to the first instance of the ‘porta-potty.’ During the 1950s and 1960s, construction companies saw the benefits of having an onsite and easily accessible restroom for workers. This led to restrooms being constructed from wood and metal.

Wood and metal make for heavy construction materials, not to mention the fact that odors become trapped. In the late 1970s, porta-potties began being manufactured out of fiberglass and then plastic and today they are most commonly made of out polyurethane plastic.

This is because it is easy to keep clean and sanitized. Today, there are also chemicals to aid in the biodegradation of waste in order to keep any odors at bay, making for a much more pleasant experience.

Things to Keep in Mind When Ordering a Honey Bucket

There are a number of reasons you may find yourself using a porta-potty. It could be at a construction site, outdoor concert, a festival or carnival, campsites, golf courses, or any other number of locations.

Something that might not cross your mind when using that facility is how much these portable toilets cost to maintain. Truth is, someone has to build these units, maintain them, restock them, and clean them.

There are a number of factors that can come into play when renting a porta-potty, including the number of people expected at the event, the duration of the event, or however long you will need the porta-potty.
